About Our Shirts

All the garments on this site are made of organic cotton, and are manufactured by econscious or American Apparel. Each company outlines their commitment to sustainability and environmental impact in statements on their websites. The information here is from the companies' websites.

Statement from econscious

econscious is affiliated with some of the world's leading sustainable trade organizations. All of our apparel and cotton bags are made in factories that have been certified according to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), the most comprehensive international standard for Organic textiles, and verified by an independent third party.

In addition, our domestic warehouse has been certified according to GOTS and verified by Oregon Tilth. Our factories adhere to a strict Workplace code of Conduct that is based on the Fair Labor Association standard.

Our current production uses fibers mostly from Turkey and India. Our cotton fiber is certified by Control Union (formerly known as SKAL) as well as other certification bodies recognized by the USDA NOP.

We use high quality reactive dyes that have low environmental impact. These dyes are accepted by the Organic Trade Associations Fiber Standards as well as the new Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS).

Statement from American Apparel

The Sustainable Edition is a selection of our most popular styles in 100% USDA certified organic cotton.

Our long-term goal is to gradually integrate principally organic cotton into our main production line so that every American Apparel garment will be a certain percentage principally organic fiber. In the long run, conventional agricultural methods need to be seriously reconsidered from health and environmental standpoints. American Apparel is actively seeking innovative ways to reduce the negative impacts of cotton cultivation.

As we continue to offer our 100% organic cotton Sustainable Edition, we are actively exploring the integration of principally organic, domestically grown cotton into our main garment lines.

American Apparel is seriously negotiating a $1.6 million solar panel installation for the roof of our downtown LA factory. This system would have an output of 180 kW of clean, renewable power.

Step by step, American Apparel is analyzing each phase of its production process to make it more efficient and low impact.
